Stann Finds (a) God

Been a bit since I've updated the state of the campaign for Stann (fighter/monk).

Currently we are in the keep of some undead lord asshole while he's out of town (in Avernus). We're gonna take out some magical flame things that keep him from being susceptible to death. As we are clearing out the various floors of the keep on our way up, we came upon the story of this lord (Soth) from before he became undead and all that. Turns out he was an asshole then too.

A really good Medicine check by Stann (he went all Sherlock Holmes on a really old crime scene), he learned that Soth murdered his first wife when their child died in childbirth. His first wife was a devout follower of a healing goddess, Mishakal.

Then we found a full on chapel to Mishakal that was untouched by the ruin of the many years since. There was a statue of the goddess there holding a blue crystal staff.

Stann's history (tldr) is that he left a pretty stereotypical orc clan after Family Drama (Fighter 1), ended up in the forest with some monks & druids (Guide background w/ Magic Initiate [Druid]) where he started learning the ways of a Mercy Monk (14 now). There he also learned of Mishakal, and while he did not devote his worship to her he did respect and revere the goddess of healing.

Once he joined the party, originally just to avenge the death of his brother Dann at the hands of a red dragon, he leaned in to more and more Mercy Monk. But in this moment, in a chapel to Mishakal surrounded by the evil of an undead lord who brutally murdered his wife and has continued to spread pain and suffering since, Stann feels a sense of anger overcome him and perhaps even Mishakal reaches out to him in this moment as well.

Stann still wants to get vengeance on the red dragon who killed his brother, but now he also wants to dedicate himself to Mishakal - a martial champion for a healing goddess. He wants to fight against the evil that causes the need for so much healing in the world.

So from now on as we level up (Stann is currently at 15 levels) he is going to become a Cleric for Mishakal.

Mechanically, this will allow him to use the blue crystal staff of Mishakal which functions as a quarterstaff (important to his topple/nick/topple combo) but is +1 and also allows him to cast some spells from it as well:

  • Command
  • Cure Wounds
  • Detect Poison And Disease
  • Lesser Restoration
  • Continual Flame
  • Remove Curse

If/when we get enough levels, will choose the Peace Domain cleric for his subclass. A really fun combo of warrior, healing monk, and cleric to fight for a goddess of healing. The best combo with that subclass is Channel Divinity - Balm Of Peace:

You can use your Channel Divinity to make your very presence a soothing balm. As an action, you can move up to your speed, without provoking opportunity attacks, and when you move within 5 feet of any other creature during this action, you can restore a number of hit points to that creature equal to 2d6 + your Wisdom modifier (minimum of 1 hit point). A creature can receive this healing only once whenever you take this action.

So as a Monk, I can move a long ways (55' by level 20) without any Opportunity Attacks spreading healing to my party. And then I still have a Bonus Action to do Flurry Of Blows for three attacks wherever I end up (or even as I move along the way). Could even throw in a Healing Hand if a little extra healing is needed on someone (or myself).

Finally, at level 19 I can get a Feat, so I'd take a boon which I'd choose Boon Of Desperate Resilience so that when I'm bloodied I am resistant to everything (except Force)

Gonna be a really fun build for my first time playing this high level of a character. Mechanically cool but even more for the story of a character who escaped violence, learned the way of mercy to add to his fighting, got pulled into vengeance and now still wanting vengeance but also wanting to fight for his new Goddess to stop those who cause so much need for her healing light.

Very cool.
